10. Dewalt DCCS690M1 40V 4Ah Lithium Ion XR Brushless Chainsaw 16″
Tired of all the noise and fumes gas chainsaws spew. Also, most electric chainsaws can limit ease of use with an extension cord.
It sometimes gets too annoying having to manage that cord. Battery-powered chainsaws may relieve you if you’re tired of all these obstacles. The product here I’m reviewing is kind of regarded as the best of all cordless chainsaws. And, it is Dewalt DCCS690M1. Most common Dewalt chainsaws are powered by different batteries.
The model I’m reviewing here come in two separate batteries; one is 6 Ah and the other is 4 Ah. Of course the 6 Ah model is more powerful. But, the 4 Ah model has a small battery, thus it is lighter. It cuts down on the weight by 1.6 pounds.
You might have noticed the word “brushless” and wondering what it deals with. Brushless motors are engineered with a combination of more power and longer runtime compared to brushed motors.
The chainsaw is able to deliver high performance and cut speed of a powerful gas unit. However, you won’t have to put up with a hassling cord. Plus, you won’t need to lubricate the chainsaw either as Lubriwell and Lubrilink will ensure that the chainsaw is automatically oiled. I hardly had to invest anything on it for maintenance.

Things to Consider before Purchasing a Chainsaw
- Size Matters – don’t buy a chainsaw based on the length of its bar or power. Purchase the one based on your physical stature, specific project requirements and budget. Bigger saws sometimes bring extra hassling and have their downsides. Saws of a bigger size usually have larger handles and spaced apart.
The longer bar weighs down the front and makes it harder for a user to control the saw when cutting. Professional saws tend to cut faster, but are also prone to kickback. Moreover, they are expensive.
Apart from being lighter, small saws are manufactured for either professional or home use. For the safest cutting, prefer a saw having a bar length 2″ longer than the wood you usually cut. So, if you usually cut 14″ tress, then a 16″ bar should be okay.
- Fit – a chainsaw is not a toy to play with, it is a power tool. So, a chainsaw should fit your physical stature. You may have to work with it for a long period of time, so choose a saw that is comfortable to hold and easy to work with. Position the bar both vertically and horizontally, feel the weight, can you be able to control it? Strike a pose you tusually do when cutting. Is the trigger easily reachable? The saw is going to be your workmate for a while, so lift a couple of saws to discern between a good and bad fit.
- Determine an Engine Power Type – what type of chainsaws do you want to work with? Do you want to work with a gas chainsaw, electric chainsaw or a battery-powered chainsaw? Determine the engine power type based on your workload and the length of your working hours.
- Gas chainsaws are the most powerful, but they are likely to emit fumes and generate noise. The power of a gas chainsaw is measured in cubic centimeters (cc). The higher the cc, the more powerful the engine. Most typical chainsaws for landscapes are between 24cc to 46cc.
- Electric Chainsaws – when your tasks involve cutting in the suburbs or performing maintenance around schools, churches or hospitals, then you must need an electric chainsaw. The electric ones are usually quieter and cleaner. Power is measured in Amps (At) for an electric chainsaw. The higher the Amps, the more powerful the electric chainsaw.
- Battery-Powered Chainsaws – these chainsaws won’t limit your movement with an extension cord. You get to carry it anywhere you want. They are the smallest chainsaws, but the least powerful. Power is measured in Volts (V). They are ideal for trimming small trees.
- Safety – A chainsaw is a mindless machine. It can get pretty dangerous if not used properly. The risk of injury is always a threat with dozens of sharp teeth moving around a long steel bar.
Within the United States, chainsaw-related injuries are over 100,000. So, every time you turn on a chainsaw, make sure you’re able to handle it and have enough knowledge about it. Invest in protective gear, don’t avoid using protecting equipment when cutting. Make sure you have the following equipment in your arsenal:
- Safety glasses
- Helmet systems
- Safety boots; cut-resistant
- Protective clothing like chainsaw chaps, gloves, trousers
Always read the manual of the chainsaw you’ll be using. Don’t use an extension cord longer than 100 feet. With an increase in the cord’s length, the voltage drops significantly. So, the shorter the length, the better.
